Under the Microscope

Year

‘Under the microscope’ is a layered art piece inspired by microscopic imagery of coral. Initial studies for this project began with experiments in fabric, working with materials and techniques I knew well. This was followed by my experimentation with glass, slumping, waterjet cutting, acid etching and other processes, to try and achieve the textures, colours and layers to reflect my textile studies.

My aim was to translate these initial studies and capture the ideas in a tactile sculptural piece of glass, that would create a sensory, immersive experience for the viewer. The piece is made up of five circles layered one behind the other. I used three dimensional inclusions, glass painting, sandblasting and slumping to create depth, drawing the audience into an otherworldly atmosphere.
