‘Glass Pools’ is a series of art glass pieces influenced by the coast of Wales. Taking samples of sea water, sand and seaweed from beaches around Swansea and Aberaeron. I took studies of my finds and interpreted them into glass rock pools. The textured surface creates the want to reach out and touch the pieces whilst also withholding the layers and textures within an intangible inner world.
I worked on each layer individually, creating intricate frit lace, glass beads and bending and forming stringers before fusing each layer in the kiln. Glass paint and silver stain were used – overfired to achieve a subtle bloom. This, as well as intentionally creating larger bubbles throughout, enhanced the merging and movement of layers in the piece. Each piece is made using at least five layers of glass, alternating between bullseye and float to achieve a slight colour variation. The glass was ground flat and bonded using UV glue before being shaped, ground and polished. As the light moves through the pieces it catches on the textured, barnacle-type nodules on the surface creating life throughout.
